The art piece ‘Now Future’, erected on the ASLEC wall near Sierre station, captures the meeting of past and present. By transforming the punk slogan “No Future” into “Now Future”, Jasm One transforms a cry of rebellion into a message of hope, inviting us to rethink the future through a new perspective, where everything can change with a simple letter. <\/p>\n
The mural delves into the history of Sierre, shaped by the “remuage” or “transhumance”, the seasonal migration of families who, in the past, went up to the mountains in summer and down to the plains in winter. These movements shaped the town’s neighborhoods until industrialization settled the inhabitants in the valley, gradually reshaping its identity. <\/p>\n
The two central characters symbolize this clash of eras. On the one hand, the grandmother embodies memory, peasant life and the harshness of a bygone era. On the other, the punk expresses modernity, protest and the desire to reinvent the present. Their hands, however, come together, symbolizing a powerful intergenerational bond, an alliance that transcends differences and underlines the need for exchange.
This gesture is all the more powerful as it is inscribed on the wall of ASLEC, an institution that for years has made social cohesion and inclusion its battleground, in a neighborhood that has long been home to alternative cultures and a diversity of expressions. <\/p>\n
The fresco’s background, inspired by Ferdinand Hodler’s painting “Walliser Landschaft”, weaves a bridge between past and present. The white of the clouds, the blue of the mountains and the yellow of the fields recount the journey of water, from glaciers to dry meadows, recalling its essential role for alpine communities. This landscape is framed by gilding that captures the light of Sierre, “City of the Sun”, giving the fresco a timeless, museum-like aura. In this way, Jasm One elevates urban art to the status of a classic work, anchored in the region’s visual heritage, while inviting young people to take hold of it. <\/p>\n
The lozenge, the work’s center of gravity, links all these visual elements and guides the eye to the essence of the message: unity in diversity, embodied by the two figures’ joined hands. It is this point of connection, beyond differences, that brings the fresco to life. <\/p>\n
With ‘Now Future’, Jasm One evokes a possible future based on exchange, trust and mutual recognition, rooted in the region’s history and landscapes, but resolutely looking to the future.<\/p>\n
