The art piece
A monumental mural on the façade of the Moréchon school in Savièse brings together past and present, art and tradition. Entitled ‘Transmission’, this art piece by Jasm One is a continuation of the Valaisan artistic heritage, taking its inspiration from two major paintings: “La leçon de taille” by Frédéric Rouge and “Paysage avec vue sur le Haut-de-Cry” by Berthe Roten-Calpini.
The first shot, taken from the art piece by Rouge, features an old man teaching a young boy the gestures of pruning. This image, imbued with tenderness, embodies the idea of intergenerational transmission, a theme deeply linked to the mural, created in the heart of the school center. This moment of sharing symbolizes both respect between generations and learning, underlining the importance of knowledge and transmission in the Savièse community.
In the background, the vibrant landscape from Berthe Roten-Calpini’s painting features Haut-de-Cry and Château de la Soie, anchoring the mural in the local visual heritage. The bright colors of the landscape contrast with the intimate scene in the foreground, while creating a subtle connection with the real mountains overlooking the school. The mural thus becomes an open window on nature, a faithful echo of Savièse’s grandiose setting.
What makes this art piece unique is the way in which Jasm One brings together for the first time these two 19th-century artists, Frédéric Rouge and Berthe Roten-Calpini, who had probably never collaborated before. Their connection, albeit indirect, was explored in the exhibition “Silhouettes bucoliques”, held in Savièse and Aigle in 2021-2022. This exhibition paralleled Rouge’s art pieces with those of the Savièse School painters, highlighting their shared representations of the rural world, even though Rouge never painted in the Valais. By combining their paintings in this mural, Jasm One creates an original visual dialogue between these two visions, offering an artistic encounter that is both unexpected and coherent.
Entirely spray-painted, ‘Transmission’ is a tribute to the masters of the past, while remaining resolutely contemporary. This mural has the audacity to bring culture to life and make it accessible to all, reactivating the heritage of the Savièse School of Painters in the public space. Students and passers-by can discover or rediscover these major art pieces at the heart of their daily lives.
Through this art piece, Jasm One reminds us of the importance of memory and respect for tradition, while at the same time making art a part of everyday life for younger generations, as a bridge between eras and knowledge.
